Please note, I haven't had time to update the site in awhile, so specific component recommendations are out of date. However, the descriptions of the components and what to look for can still be very helpful. Enjoy!
Welcome to BasicHardware.com. This site was designed to make choosing your hardware components easy. We've tested all kinds of hardware, scoured through review after review, and discussed components and their performance with real-world users to find the best components to recommend to you. We hope you will find these recommendations helpful. To begin, just select the component you're looking for from the menu. We also describe each component and what to look for in the components when making your own decisions.
DREAM MACHINES - The Ultimate Computers! See how yours stacks up and get quick recommendations for parts for your next computer!
HowTos. This section is designed to simplify the processes of doing common, sometimes complicated tasks such as formatting your hard drive and getting the most out of Windows. As the name implies, these pages tell you HowTo do these tasks.
This site was designed with several purposes in mind:
- To help make purchasing decisions that will allow you to get the best hardware possible for your money.
- To inform those who would like to learn more about computer hardware and how it all works together.
- To help others in getting the most out of their computer and assist in making upgrades easy.
Where are the Numbers (Benchmarks)?
- I use benchmarks to test components, but I don't publish them. Why? Because I'm using a different method than other PC Hardware sites. Intead of just giving you numbers to wade through, I simply say what's the best. This simplifies everything for me and you. Sure, you have to take my word for it, but who's to say that other sites have valid benchmarks anyway? :)
For questions about computer problems and computer hardware, I suggest you join The Hardware Group email discussion list (of which I am a member). You can post your messages to the list and often receive helpful advice. To learn more about me and my other web sites, click here.
This site is NOT meant for professional hardware users, however, they will benefit from the site and hardware recommendations as well. This site IS designed for amateur computer users, computer tweakers, and anyone looking for tips before purchasing a new computer or new computer parts. The site is here to educate about computer hardware and make the purchasing process easier while instilling confidence in the purchaser that they are getting the best possible components for their money.
Under each parts category, you will find a basic description of the part, what to look for when purchasing that part, and recommendations with reasons for that suggestion. The "Miscellaneous" page includes discussions of hardware such as mice, keyboards, floppy drives, cases, etc.
The new "Glossary" page includes a vast collection of terms defined. It is more than just definitions though, and has a lot of examples and suggestions for what to look for. Not sure what something means? Check there.
The "Links" page contains links to other computer hardware pages. Most of these pages are more advanced. Visit them if you find this page is too broad in nature and/or not advanced enough for you.
The "Advanced Topics" page includes just that, advanced topics. Currently, these are OverClocking, Building Your Own Computer, and Tweaking Tips. What is OverClocking you ask? Go to the page to find out!
